Breakfast Seminar: Odour Control Systems of the Thickening and Dewatering of Process at ROPEC
Presented by Colin Welburn P.Eng., Parnter, Welburn Consulting
The Thickening and Dewatering Building (T&D Building) at the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre (ROPEC) recently underwent process upgrades. As part of these upgrades, an odour control system (OCS) was added to the existing exhaust system. The performance standards specified in the tender document were very ambitious (99.9% removal of reduced sulphur species and ammonia). Welburn Consulting was retained to evaluate the performance of the installed system. To ensure that the OCS could be reliably evaluated and ensure that outlet concentrations were at detectable levels, the testing team was required to supply a continuous inlet concentration of 5ppm hydrogen sulphide and 60ppm ammonia for a minimum of three hours. This was achieved through the injection of pure H2S and pure ammonia gas to the OCS inlet duct. This presentation summarizes the details of the testing campaign, the challenges associated with maintaining high inlet concentrations of toxic gases during emissions testing, and the results of the study.
