Betsy Varghese P.Eng.

Waste Management Specialist, Dillon Consulting

Betsy is an Associate and the Technical Strategist for Dillon's national waste management group which consists of over two dozen solid waste practitioners. She has contributed to a range of waste management assignments for public and private sector clients across Canada. Betsy’s role in waste management planning projects has been to review existing programs and initiatives and identify areas for improvement in order for efficiencies to be made and/or diversion goals to be achieved. Many of her projects have incorporated extensive public and stakeholder consultation including the use of community-based social marketing tactics. In addition, Betsy has been involved in individual Environmental Assessments for residual waste disposal facilities and securing/modifying approvals for waste management facilities in Ontario through Environmental Compliance Approvals.

Patrick D'Aoust

Environmental Technical Officer, University of Ottawa

Patrick is a researcher, educator, and engineering technical officer at the University of Ottawa. He conducts and supports research in a variety of Biosystem, Civil, and Ecological engineering projects; such as heavy metal removal from mine-impacted waters, stormwater retention pond chemistry, and cold-weather biofilm wastewater treatment. Currently, he is part of a team at uOttawa investigating wastewater epidemiology in local treatment systems as part of the CanCovid initiative.

Jenn Dorr

Senior Policy Analyst, Impact Assessment Agency of Canada

Jennifer Dorr joined the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada in September 2019, as the member of the Engagement Policy team. Prior to joining the Agency, she worked in Parliamentary Affairs, supporting the development of the Impact Assessment legislation. Jennifer has also worked as an Environmental Assessment co-ordinator at Natural Resources Canada. Jennifer studied Environmental Science at the University of Ottawa, and since joining the Government of Canada in 2014, her work has focused on enabling public dialogue in natural resources management. She enjoys the satisfaction of a well -planned, efficient event that gives all participants a voice and works to find common ground and solutions together.

Dr. Ignacio Segovia-Dominguez

Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Texas at Dallas

Dr. Ignacio Segovia-Dominguez is ConTex Research Fellow at the University of Texas at Dallas, developing novel analytic tools for modelling and forecasting dynamics of climate sensitive infectious diseases. He holds Master in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Computer Science from CIMAT, Mexico. Ignacio's research agenda focuses on topological and geometric methods in statistics and machine learning, analysis of complex dynamic networks, and evolutionary computation. Jointly with JPL NASA, he is currently working on new methods aiming to improve our understanding of hidden mechanisms behind air quality and atmospheric conditions and COVID19.

Jonathan Arnold

Senior Research Associate, Canadian Institute for Climate Choices

Jonathan Arnold has a diverse background in environmental policy with an expertise in energy, drinking water and wastewater, solid waste, and traffic congestion. Jonathan’s previous roles include Senior Research Associate with Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission and Economist with Environment Canada. He holds an MA in Public Policy from Simon Fraser University.

Bob Larocque

President & CEO, Canadian Fuels Association

Bob Larocque, a native of Hawkesbury, Ontario, recently joined the Canadian Fuels Association as President and CEO in September 2020. Bob is proud to represent Canada’s innovative fuels sector and the critical role the sectors plays to provide reliable, safe and environmentally responsible transportation energy to all Canadians.

Bob leads the association in driving policies that improve environmental performance, protect industry competitiveness, and strengthen Canada’s critical energy infrastructure. Focusing on maintaining an open dialogue between industry and government, its stakeholders and the public are priorities. Bob also strongly believes that the association can offer access to information and analysis in order to help drive informed policy decisions.

Prior to joining the CFA, Bob was the Senior Vice-President at the Forestry Products Association of Canada where he supported the sector on policy and technical issues relating to climate change, innovation, Indigenous engagement and environmental regulations. Mr. Larocque was also responsible for supporting the sector in achieving its “30 by 30 Climate Change Challenge”.

Bob attended the University of Ottawa graduating with an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering. He resides in Ottawa, Canada with his wife Tara and their three children.”

Collette Preston

PhD Candidate, Trent University

Colette Preston is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent University in Peterborough, ON. Her research concerns the atmospheric dispersal and resuspension of microplastics, with an emphasis on the potential emissions of microplastics from agricultural fields treated with biosolids. This project includes field research using a portable in-situ erosion laboratory (PI-SWERL) and research in the Trent University Environmental Wind Tunnel (TEWT)

Presentation: A wind tunnel and field evaluation of various dust suppressants
